Paved
Wave
Cocoa, FL
(1976)
This month we are showing a few old
pics from Florida's second skatepark, The Paved Wave. It was in Cocoa
Florida, a little north of Bruce Walker's home town. Even if it wasn't,
Bruce would have been one of the first to ride it I'm sure. So we figured
we ask him about the park since little is known about it.
Steve: "What
was the Paved Wave skatepark in Cocoa like?
This month we have some pictures in our Flashback section on this park. Can you give us a brief description or story on the park, how
it started, who were the local skaters, and the scene in general."
Bruce: "The Paved Wave
was the 2nd park built in Florida.
It was mostly a winding snake run that was very surf oriented and very
fun. Greg Loehr ruled the park.
I also remember skating there with McCall and McCranels.
It was one of the most dangerous parks I’ve ever ridden though because
of the way they cut the concrete off sharply at the edges of the runs.
If you fell with any momentum near the edge, the concrete was like a huge
knife blade waiting to rip into your flesh. The owner was kind of sketchy as well. Once he kicked every single skater out of his park in the
middle of a skateboard contest. Somebody
made him mad and he lost it and screamed that everyone had to leave.
I never went back again and shortly thereafter he was out of business and
the Paved Wave was paved flat."
Sitting atop the take off area. It looks like it
would be fun to carve it for a while.

A more complete article on the park, plus pictures of
Bruce too, check it out!
Greg Loehr carving off the lip. Notice the swallow
tail. Is there even grip tape on that board?!
