Some killer skating going down at the Kona
Summer Nationals. Standing room only crowd. The hot weather was only
outdone by the hot skating. Lots of superstars in the house. If you
were there you know who. If you weren't then show up to the next one. Grand
Masters, 38 and up division: Duane
Peters. If you haven't seen Duane skate in years it's mandatory that
you find a way to do so, live and in person. He truly is the Master of
Disaster, there's no better term for him. Skated the Kona bowl like it was
his backyard, while all others had a tough time with the place. Invert
Reverts! Chris Baucom too had some
serious runs in. He started off with a Smith Grind fully standing up,
front truck deep inside the bowl, that must have gone 9 feet. Hackett
pushes hard in every situation. Every grind, every turn is done with total
conviction, aggression, and style. Just goes to show how important those
things are, it put him in 3rd. Layback in the shallow end, nice! Kurt
Bodenshatz pulled some great tricks and looked almost at home in the
bowl. If he had ridden the thing prior to the contest I think we would
have seen some real good shit. Masters 30-37
year old division: Buck Smith rides
this pool better than anyone, period. I suppose he should, it's his
hometown park. Buck made it all look so easy. Inverts, Smith Grinds,
everything, everywhere, with ease. Todd
Johnson: another Kona home-boy. Always looks smooth as silk. Brad
Edwards is a truly unique master of his long skateboard. I really
enjoyed watching him flow everywhere throughout the park. STYLE.
