Hot Hot Hot. Yeah, that was the
temperature and the skating on this mid-September day in Orlando. I had
not seen the Orlando skatepark in person until this day. The finish on
this park is so smooth, (garage floor smooth). The design is well thought
out and the bowls flow you from one area to another almost effortlessly.
The contest had been planned for the Lake
Mary skatepark...however the guy I previously spoke to had since quit his job
and the remaining city folk were a little more rigid on us having a
contest. We did not have time to present our plan to the city council for
approval, we had people who wanted to skate and husbands with "hall
passes" for this weekend. Binky Conklin (local Orlando-an) quickly
contacted the Orlando Skatepark with our proposal..they were hip. Then
Binky proceeded to shake the goods out of many companies for the contest.
The biggest sponsor was the Galactic Skateshop, huge thanks to these
people! We also had goods from Black Label, Comet, and Outlook. I
had made 50 tshirts, and trophies for the gig as well. No one went home
empty handed at all.
Upon arrival I ran into Dan Murray, his
son Andrew, and Merrick Crittenden all getting their lines down in the
park. Binky, Roach, Chris Conway, and others were also showing up and
joining in. Chris Baucom and Kelly Lynn showed up as well mid day...didn't
skate...having competed with fierce competitors in the past, I took this as a
sign that these guys were ready and was looking forward to seeing them
skate. Bruce Walker and Roberto "Boly" Cortez also showed up
late and Boly entered the contest mid-stream; Bruce skated some runs as a
special contender (we didn't have a Grand Grand Masters). Bruce was seen
grinding the coping on his longboard, classic style, it was a real treat to
watch.
The contest format was to have each rider
take their run in order, twice. Then we had an open skate-jam for about 30
minutes. After this we repeated the in-order format from the beginning of
the contest. Everyone was pushing it, having a great time, and working
hard in the heat...man was it hot...frying pan hot.
In the end 1st place Grand Masters went to
Kelly Lynn. 1st Place Masters went to Craig Dupree. Kelly was
ripping hard, you could tell he really had been skating a lot lately. Had
his lines down, and more tricks than anyone it seemed. Bowl to Bowl ollie
transfers, backside airs over the hips, layback roll outs, fs rock n rolls, all
kinds of tricks and everywhere in the park....total control. Craig also
skated with authority, backside ollies, disasters, and these 50/50's where he'd
come in off his front truck (too new of a trick for me to know the name)..great
skating.
Everyone it seemed got a deck, a trophy, a
few shirts, and the first few placers even got a nice gift certificate from
Galactic skateshop...1st place got $100.00...and then on down...Thanks again to
all our sponsors and everyone who came out!
